About Orthotics and DME

Recovery after surgery or a sports-related injury often requires durable medical equipment (DME). DME products like a lumbar sacral orthosis, knee brace, or custom orthotics help speed recovery and support mobility. Our team at Pure Health Aurora in Aurora, Illinois, regularly prescribes DME to patients. Whether you need a knee brace to move more efficiently or custom orthotics to relieve foot pain, our team can help. Call Pure Health Aurora to schedule a DME appointment or request an appointment online today.

Orthotics and DME Q&A

What is durable medical equipment (DME)?

Durable medical equipment (DME) is an umbrella term for assistive devices prescribed by a health care provider. At Pure Health Aurora, our team specializes in orthopedics-related DME, including knee, back, wrist, and shoulder braces and custom orthotics.

DME supports your recovery and mobility after an injury or surgery. These devices reduce pressure on specific areas, relieving pain and preventing you from reinjuring yourself.

What does getting DME involve?

Getting DME at Pure Health Aurora is a two-step process.

First, our team will review your medical records, ask about your symptoms, and complete a physical exam. They will look at your skin for bruising, redness, and swelling and gently press on the affected area to identify sensitive spots. Your provider will also assess your reflexes, muscle strength, and range of motion.

Our team can diagnose some minor injuries visually. However, if our team suspects an underlying injury, like a broken bone or sprained ligament, we’ll order diagnostic imaging to examine your bones, joints, and surrounding tissues.

If our team determines you can benefit from DME, they will take three-dimensional scans of the injured area. For example, if you have heel spurs, your provider will scan your feet. Then, they’ll send your scans to a nearby lab that will create your custom orthotics.

When the lab finishes your DME several weeks later, you will return to Pure Health Aurora. Our team will have you try your orthotics or brace on and make adjustments to ensure your device fits perfectly. Our team might also ask you to come in for routine checkups so we can monitor your progress.
